Where I live, the Google Map service does not work. All I get is a blank blue square with an arrow in it. I imagine there must be many parts of the world where this is also true. The default map and addresses are unhelpful. Can I get rid of the Google map altogether and replace it with my own map - processed, as it happens in this case, from Google's Sattelite map. Or any map at all. Thanks.
In your case you can delete the Maps Custom Field entirely. To setup a different Map on the Theme, you need to do the custom code.
I want to revisit this topic. I find that Google exists but is incomplete in my area. Consequently, some addresses have a correct map. In others, Google redirects the address to one that it recognises and the pinpoints the wrong area. So, (1) Is it possible to disable the map on a one by one basis, or is it all or nothing situation - all listing use the maps or none do? (2) If it is all or nothing, then is it possible to remove the default "100 Buchanan St" address in Annapolis,USA, so that the map does not show. In that case I can use the map when it is correct. When it isn't, I could leave the address blank so that the map does not show and include a map in the body of the listing in cases where Google misbehaves.
OK, thanks. I would like to try delete the Maps Custom Field entirely, but how do I do that? My Custom Fields does not have a "Map Custom Fields" per se. I does have 3 fields - Address, Address Latitude, and Address Longtitude. Are those the same things? And if, having tried the deletion I have a change of heart, how can I install them again?
Yes, You can delete these three fields Address, Address Latitude, and Address Longtitude. To remove map completely.
We do need an address for every business. However when I create a new custom field to secure the address, it seems that the the field name "address" is inextricably linked to the Google Map. I might say that just removing the Latitude and Longtitude fields have worked very well in the past, but now the inaccurate Google Map keeps showing up again. Is there no way to disentangle the "address" field from the Google Map? Because I have found an adequate solution to the Google problem.
dme2 - I'm curious what you have found, because I have been having map problems too. Please share on here - thank you
I found that the markers I put up always change back to those pre-designed by Google. Also I use Irfanview as a graphics program. What I do is this. I pull up Google Maps, place my marker where I want it, and while it is still there, I do a screen capture with Irfanview. I edit this, and place it along with the other text in the listing - with something that says, e.g. Here's where you can find us. Of course, the map is static, you can't get "directions" after that, but for me that is not critical. I still need to know whether I can disassociate the Address field from the Google map and how, and am waiting for that reply.
thanks dme2 - I appreciate you explaining that. I wish I could hep wit your map problem - I need a solution too!
