Greetings All, I've been getting spam user registrations since my geothemes site went live months ago and also getting a lot of listings from places that did not fit within my local listings model. I tried a few spam plugins but non seemed to w ork with the geothemes but then I found this http://wordpress.org/plugins/iq-block-country/ Given that i'm in the UK and limit my directory listings to a 20 mile radius of a specific city it occurred to me that really there isn't a great need for visitors from outside the UK so blocking users from other countries which is where 99% of the spam comes from is not a problem. It works for me, i've had no spam registrations in the past two weeks while using this pluggin and blocking about a dozen or so countries (I use it in conjunction with http://wordpress.org/plugins/counterize/ to see what countries traffic is coming from) Might not be as affective for users in other countries but it might help a bit. Good Luck Jamie
I am also getting high volumes of spam. Would love a fix, because a css reverse will not work. Unless anyone knows a way around users entering their emails dynamically then automatically reversing it once entered....
One thing I've discovered is that if you block USA from the front end it will stop google from listing your site!
We're in the US and received a few of these as well in November, tried to lock things down a bit more on the site, updated to wp 3.7.1, etc. but this past week have been "hit" with 7 new users added, showing up with Contributor permissions. Since we are setting up listings manually and not allowing people to create their own accounts, our "register user" and "submit listing pages" are redirected to an alternative page than normal, so not visible on the front end through normal means. So I actually don't understand yet how they are getting in to create these users -- its does not appear they are using an existing admin account (and I've changed that up as well), and it does not appear they are posting anything, so far I cannot find any "damages", and so far only 1 has actually Logged in after creating the new user account. We do have WordFence (free ver.) running which is providing an awesome amount of detail and the ability to block IPs. But I thought I read that the more you block, the more slugglish the site can become too, something that is already an issue. Overall, its very disconcerting and I'm well aware that I'm not an expert in this area, but somehow need to get a handle on this.
Hi Guys, I was having dozens of new users every day and got into trouble with my hosting company as some were using the site to send spam emails from the server and on using the latest theme update with the 8 digit captcha for new user and also listing contact form it has helped to clear completely my problem with spam users. The sites have been getting monitored by my hosting company H ..tor as they were anxious that the spam emails stopped from the server. To date they have closed the issue as this has helped stop the problem I can say that I have not had 1 new spam user on any of the sites since updating to latest theme in the past 8 wks. I was at fault having delayed in updating the latest version of theme, so if any have not updated yet to the latest version it would be worth a try to see if it helps with the problem. For anyone in the EU and running a cookie compliance control plugin, I found another that is working well, it has the advantage of being able to have it display at the bottom of the site and allows to edit message, this works much better when the site is viewed on mobile device as most others that I have previously used displayed at the top of site and were difficult to clear and unsightly on mobile devices. The plugin is 'cookie-notice' a free plugin from WPress and after 3 weeks using without any problems looks like being compatible with theme. Hope this is of some help. Cheers Tob.
Hi Guys, first I would like to wish everyone a peaceful and prosperous 2014 New Year. where ever you are! Just to update you on my span registrations, to date I still have not had any spam registrations since posting on another thread, http://www.inkthemes.com/community/threads/to-s-spam-bot-abuse-hosting-message.8869/ As you can see I was in big trouble and had my hosting restricted. At that time I was getting 10 - 15 Spam registrations in contributor mode daily across the sites. Appreciate any views if this is still happening to you if you has the latest theme update installed and captcha activated. If this is the case that you are still then havin span problems then we need to look further. Cheers everyone and a very Happy New Year!! Tob
I receive notices of new accounts when none are actually set-up. I assume that people check new domain listings and simply type in www.domainname.com/wp-admin Geo-Craft login page comes up with ability to create a new account. Assume people are looking for way to attach internet bots for tagging on advertising. I manually add all accounts. Is there someway to eliminate ability to "create an account" on this page, so only the administrator can login?
