Captions on gallery page

Is it possible to show image captions on the gallery view?
Also is it possible to make portfolios within the gallery?

Such feature is not available with theme current gallery.
You can use "Nextgen Gallery" plugin for it.

If I use next gen gallery would it still be possible to use the great colorway shadows underneath th images?

Yes, Nextgen gallery plugin do not contain that type of shadow look.
If you want both features (Caption and shadow), Then you can create two different pages one with theme default gallery template and other with nextgen gallery.
That's the only solution.
