Is it possible to update Wordpress without losing all the customisation and content on my website?

Hi, I'm currently working with WP 3.5.1. WP3.8 is now available. But is it possible to update WP without losing everything I've done on my website using your Cloriato Pro theme? I've done so much work and CSS on it, I don't want to have to lose it all just to update. But I also want to download a plugin that requires a newer version of WP to work.

Sorry could you clarify that? Previously on a another website (using a free WP theme) I updated WP, thinking it was a similar procedure as updating an Apple iPhone and then everything on my website was completely lost. All my content, images were distorted, custom styling etc and I had to rebuild my entire website from scratch which is when I downloaded one of your themes and started again. I have been working on my current website using your Cloriato Pro theme since April and have done loads to it so I really don't want to lose anything. What I want to know is, is it safe to update WP and any of the plugins I have without affecting the appearance and functionality of my website?

 

For example, to voice my concern, I have found this on the WP website forum: WARNING: The upgrade process will affect all files and folders included in the main WordPress installation. This includes all the core files used to run WordPress. If you have made any modifications to those files, your changes will be lost.
How do I protect all my files and folders from being changed when I update WP?

While updating WordPress.Your theme option data, Post and pages will not lost.

But just for security purpose export (Dashboard > Tools > Export) your wordpress content.
