Is there ANY way to have a multi city plugin, or to have multi cities in the GeoCraft theme?

    Certainly!

Say I want to do a directory for Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta is a big city made up of smaller cities or towns. Some of the towns are Atlanta, Norcross, Decatur, Conyers, Buckhead, for example.

As the theme is now, if you want to do an Atlanta directory, you could set up these cities as Listing Categories. Then, within each Listing Category, you would have true business categories, like restaurants, movie theaters, dentists, night clubs, etc. Going the way the theme is set up now, you'd have to use those as Listing Tags.

BUT, when you do it like this, opening up the Listing Category for say Norcross, you will get EVERYTHING in Norcross - restaurants, movie theaters, dentists, etc. what is someone wants to browse ONLY restaurants in Norcross? Or ONLY dentists in Buckhead?

As far as I can see, this is a small limitation of the theme currently.

A couple of other directory themes have a Multi City Plugin, or Multi City Option built in to the theme, where you can assign CITIES, then categories within each CITY. So, someone can pull up Norcroes, and then look at the business CATEGORIES within that CITY.

    Is that possible?

Is the best way to do this now use the category as the city, and the tag as the type of business?

This is a problem I have been struggling with as well. Trying to create a Canadian only based company. To make this 'GeoCraft' theme have a 'Geolocation' I will be doing the following:

Setting up a geo-gateway, where-in the user selects their closest region. Then that is transferred to a individual 'GeoCraft' theme website for that specific region.

All in all I would have to have thirteen different geocraft sites for the thirteen different provinces. This will cause a bit more space to be used. Although I believe it is a better way then to have all listings from one country appear in one site.

If I am going the hard-route about this. Please let me know :p

    All the best,
    -Kent

    Hi Kent and Mo,
I agree with your thoughts and would be a large PLUS if it included the long requested coupons and QR codes, the technology is there as other themes already have auto generated QR codes with each listing which is really essential when pushing the advantages of the theme being responsive to all mobile devices, the QR code today is the key to the door for mobile devices.

Kent your way is good for large city's or provinces, also means that as the directory listings grow the site/theme will not experience overload problems , also if a problem or failure occurred on a site then this means your whole system would not be out of action. I think this is the best way to go. Kent I would be interested in assistance in creating the gateway, willing to pay.

Thank you for your views guys.

I would certainly agree that having multi-city features would benefit the theme a lot. I actually have numerous cities setup as categories myself. If you could even have a countries option - that would be great! My business directory is actually international, so I need countries, then cities within the countries.

Have to agree, another vote here for these features too. In the meantime, my direction will be a solution similar to Kent's as well. Hey Toby, we're in the same area -- pm me if you want to bounce around some ideas about this too

I do not think this will get resolved. As it is quite complicated to implement into a WP theme. I believe any geo location will have to be done by hand.

That's ridiculous Kent - not your suggestion, but even entertaining the thought of doing that...on a directory with maybe hundreds or thousands of listings, you can't do them one by one!!!

    This is what it needs:

You have your "Category" taxonomy built in WP by default, what you need is to create a new hierarchical taxonomy for "Location" then declare your terms hierarchy like this:

    Country
    - State1
    - - Region1
    - State2 ..... etc

Implement that in the theme taxonomy as default and all should be good.

    Hello,

Currently we are not planning to add multi city option in the geocraft theme. One of the possible way would be to create multisite WordPress site network of different cities with GeoCraft and link different wordpress onto a static page. However this is just an idea not much recommended.

    Thanks

Thanks Nitesh - not really a solution as you say.

You can see there is alot of demand for this so I suggest you consider it for future upgrades.

I know of another theme developer who will be working on something similar to GEOCRAFT with the addition of all that is not in this theme!

    Waiting...
