Slider images are distorted and slider size

Two questions on this lovely theme:
1. What can I do to prevent the slider from grossly distorting the images that are uploaded? I'm using high-res images but they are getting stretched badly when used in the slider.
2. Is there any way to have the slider take up less height on the page?

You are requested to use images of recommended size there (800 X 437).

Hi Naveen - thanks, I did that and it looks better. Anyway to make the slider take up a less tall amount of space on the page?

 

That will require lots of CSS modification for the slider that will be time-consuming as well.

It would be better if you can use any slider plugin like https://wordpress.org/plugins/smart-slider-3/
