Solid background for Menu, Etc on Home Page

I have a image that I want to put on the home page, but it makes the text very hard to read. How can I get a solid background on the menu and other text on the homepage that has a transparent background?

I am not able to put in the background until the owner approves it, but the url is theexpertappraiser.com. Before I put in the busy background I want to make sure all of the text on the page is easy to read so I was thinking solid background on menu are and other text areas would be necessary.
