Using BuddyPress with Colorway Pro

I am fairly new to WP please bear with me.
I am trying to build a website that is both a source of information and a social networking site and am having problems using the BuddyPress plugin.
It would seem that many of the components of BP are not functioning with Colorway Pro, I have pasted the link here. The instructions for BP say that I simply need to click the box of the components I want to activate, easier said than done.

I am trying to achieve a social network similar to our famous friends facebook, where members can post messages, photos etc, invite friends to join, send PM´s etc.
Any suggestions on compatible plugins or maybe I need to change the WP theme.

After installing the BuddyPress plugin, I follow Dashboard - Settings - Buddypress, this takes me to a screen that has tabs for components, pages and settings.
On the components page already enabled were extended profiles and activity streams, in addition, at the end of the options their is Buddypress Core and Community Members, again automatically activated.
The following options have a box for enabling and disabling
account settings
friends connection
private messaging
user groups
site tracking
when I select the box to try and enable any or all of these options nothing happens, there is no save box anywhere on the screen and when i leave the screen and go back they are not enabled.
I have thought about disabling/deleting Buddypress and then reinstalling to see if it is a glitch but will I loose the information of the friends that have already been created for my testing of the site.

To resolve this problem
Go to the Colorwaytheme > css > 960_24_col_responsive.css
and add code as shown in the image.
